To Google or Not To Google

September 20, 2011 Leave a comment Go to comments

There are so many search engines out there right now, but most people default to Google.  But when you are living in China, it seems that anything associated with Google goes a little slower.

What other options are there?

Wikipedia has a list of many different search engines, categorized for different purposes.

My favorites to use with students are YahooBing and Spezify.

Personally, I love to use Spokeo for people searches (sub-title is “not your grandma’s white pages”) and PriceGrabber for shopping.

Please comment below with some of your favorite ones.

I stick with Google but tend to go through a VPN to get to it because the degraded performance is beyond a joke here in China now. It’s essential for me because I use Gmail for my e-mail and have done for around 10 years so changing it isn’t practical.

I occasionally use Bing as a back up but since they struck their deal with the authorities the searches have become much less relevant.
