In January, I had Marty  Banks (local author) come in for 2-3rd graders. She writes beginning chapter books. She is super good at answering questions about the writing process and her books was really popular with the students. She was not as entertaining as the last author I had, but she did engage those students with her book – G. G. Snowboards. AND SHE IS FREE!!!!!!!!  I reviewed this on goodreads.com and amazon.com. “This book reads like a friend talking to you. Great new chapter book to add to my library. The author Marty Banks came to my school today and talked to 2-4th graders. Students were begging to check out he book. Great book!” She also has an awesome blog linked at the bottom of this post where every week she reviews an easy chapter book.   Here is a blurb on her…..

Marty Banks, a Colorado Springs children’s author, is currently scheduling school visits to promote her new chapter book, G.G. Snowboards. As book #1 in the upcoming G.G. Series, the book follows a spunky eight-year-old as she learns a new extreme sport in each book. With bold photo illustrations by a former member of the U.S. Snowboard Team, The G.G. Series focuses on a strong literary narrative as it follows a spirited Hispanic girl who learns to conquer fear, friendship and sports.

For the visits, Banks likes 30-minute sessions with no more than 75 kids at once. In each session, she reads selections from the book and also talks about reading and the writer’s life (as real people), artistic choices and some fun, related facts. Since the chapter books are best for kids in grades 2 and 3, the sessions are best for those grades, but both 1st and 4th grades might be interested as well. Banks does not charge for these school visits.

Banks is currently scheduled through mid-February but can look at dates in late February, March, April and May.
