Schools and Parents Agreeing

Parents will always want more say in their children’s education but while they are at schools, teachers need to be the experts. When a parent approached my school with $20,000 donation for technology needs, the parent asked that the funds be used for an iPad cart that could be rotated around the school. The Tech Coordinator and myself had many discussions with the parent. We told them that we would do that if we had to, but research shows that equality in access is low when the technology is centrally located. Tech-savvy teachers would monopolize the cart and other teachers would avoid the cart. This would not be what is best for students. Instead the Tech Coordinator worked with the parent, staff and the principal to show the effectiveness of more tech in the classroom. The parent agreed that the tech coordinator and the school were the professionals and needed to use the money however the school deemed fit. The principal agreed that the Tech Coordinator was the expert and support him in his desires on how to use technology in the building. Empowering teachers is a very important skill especially when it comes to technology in our schools.
